Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do I have to register to Pointshare?

Pointshare registration is required to save points you mark with Loadstone. Your points are not added to the Pointshare database unless you choose the ''Send to Pointshare' 'option. The email address you enter in your Pointshare registration is for User ID purposes only and will not be shared with other Loadstone users or the general public. Please note that email addresses used are case sensitive and cannot be changed. An internet connection is required to complete registration to Pointshare.

What is Pointshare?

Pointshare is the database of points that Loadstone has access to.

What are points?

A point is a specific location on Earth. A set of longitude and latitude coordinates is a point. Loadstone uses points from Open Street Map and other publicly available mapping sources as well as points contributed by Loadstone users.

how do I import a Loadstone database or checkpoints file from a previous version of Loadstone?

  1. rename the file so it has a .ilspt extension.
  2. Send yourself an email with the file attached. The file must be in text format, not binary.
  3. Open the email on your IPhone, navigate to the attached file and tap on it.
  4. Navigate to the 'Share' button and tap on it.
  5. Tap on 'Copy to Loadstone.'
  6. Loadstone will open and provide further prompts.
  7. The same steps apply for importing checkpoint files but the file extension must be .ilscp.

Is Loadstone coming to Android?

We don't have the financial resources for this at the moment. Donations of Android phones and computer hardware would be incentive for us to consider a version of Loadstone for Android.

Does Loadstone provide turn by turn navigation?

This feature is not currently available. However, it is something we are looking into.

How does auto-announce work?

Auto announce only works when you have checkpoints loaded. If there are no checkpoints loaded, auto announce will not activate.

What is a checkpoint?

Whereas a point is any location on Earth, a checkpoint is a location that you mark as significant to you. Checkpoints can be intersections along a route, landmarks, bus stops, etc. that you use to get to get to a desired destination.

How do I become a Loadstone beta tester or translator?

What is involved in being a Loadstone translator?

If you are fluent in a language other than English, and are looking for volunteer translation experience, Loadstone could use your skills. Please read the Translators page to find out more.
