Yes, in that case you will have to select the point for which you want to be informed continuously, otherwise you always select the nearest location and it'll then keep telling you the most nearest place you are passing through.

No, it is not like that at least with DotWalker, I can very well lock the
  screen while DotWalker is
running in the background and it keeps me prompting about the nearest place
while my screen is turned off. Another advantage of this is even if you are
in some other window/app, it still keeps informing you about your nearest
point. Although it doesn't really give us such comprehensive
interface/features like Loadstone, I'm quite satisfied with its limited
  functionality.

You build your own routes in dotWalker, but, haven't used it too much, since
think it can also interact somewhat with google maps, and while the other
one am playing around with is called point finder (accessibility), if you
just want to use google maps itself, while I don't find it's own interface
of much use, an app called walky talky helps you find and invoke walking
directions to places, and another one called place saver lets me save a
current location, and then retrieve coordinates later on, etc. etc.

My primary issue with really getting going using android GPS is that in
general, for example, you can't then lock the touch screen, so you'd need to
literally hold it in your hand, instead of, like when using loadstone, just
put phone in pocket, and listen to prompts etc. via earphones, but anyway -
still looking into putting together my own form of a carrying case, from a
form of pencil case to protect screen from being touched, etc.

  Stay well
