Actually, I assumed that creating, following and reversing a route from a  NMEA file only, without a need for creating checkpoints and database files is not possible and too complicated; that's why I suggested an existing solution. I took the languages as well as file extension from off-line Breadcrumb Generator.
Of course, your solution is definitely much better and more user-friendly and I support it enthusiastically. Support of many languages will in fact be not needed, unless an user has a possibility of changing language interface.
Logging submenu would be useful if we have more than let' say two options related to it.

Some of what you propose might happen but other things just aren't needed or 
not really possible. I'm not sure we need a logging submenu at all. In the 
next version it'll be possible to playback an nmea log as if it were a real 
gps receiver so that takes care of the loading problem. I'm thinking the 
breadcrumb generator will be a realtime thing, you'd activate it as you're 
walking and it would generate the points elliminating the need to even keep 
a log file. That would handle the point generating part of the process. As 
for then following the generated route I don't think it should be necessary 
to generate one file for forward and another for reverse, it should be 
possible to load a route and then select the direction or have loadstone 
determine it automatically. Then the direction comments would be generated 
as you proceeded along the route. This will require getting ordered 
checkpoints working.
As for the settings you suggest, they might go in a separate tab or be 
included in an existing one. Most of the parameters are probably fine but 
comment language just isn't going to happen. Since only one language file is 
loaded at a time you can't change the language for only part of the program. 
At some point there may be a way to change loadstone's language at runtime 
but that would effect the whole program. Your list of languages is out of 
date, we're up to 20 supported languages now. The interval parameter is 
going to require some thought. If the points are generated too close 
together then you'd have checkpoint announcements going off constantly.
The settings would be part of the settings tab, not activated from another 
menu, that just wouldn't make much sence.
I'm not sure where you're getting these file extensions from. Loadstone 
doesn't use file extensions but in the next version it will have file mime 
types.
