Hi all,

The OSM XAPI (Extended Application Program Interface) is up and running
again. This means, that the OSM map data can be downloaded per area,
therefore eliminating the problems with huge files as offered on several
websites. An area input box has been added to the GeoCoder on the Loadstone
tools page, allowing to enter the length of a side of a square boundary
box. By entering 10 you specify an area of 10 by 10 KM (100 square KM).
Choosing London as a center this resulted in a 26 MB 'data.osm' file using
the direct download link on the result page. The updated off-line tools
feature a new OSM Converter that can handle these files. The tool was
tested on a 135 MB file using a PC running Windows2000 with 960 MB of
internal memory. It took about 15 minutes to convert this file. The OSM
Converter now uses the MySQL database engine, which is integrated in the
updated off-line tools package. The tools now also support the new file
system that Loadstone will use as of the next release. Users of the
Loadstone off-line tools are advised to upgrade the complete package from:
(direct download, 10.5 MB).
Suggestions and comments are welcome as usual via this list.
