OK, Shawn. Thanks for your nice and precise explanation:) Now I understand how it all works and appreciate it. Despite some inconvenients, the new checkpoint format has definitely more technical .

The problem with the old checkpoint file format was it only stored 
coordinates and then looked them up when the file was loaded. This went 
wrong if the database in use didn't contain the points in the checkpoint 
file. In that case the checkpoint wouldn't get used. The new format contains 
all needed information about a point so the database doesn't really matter. 
This also allows the point information in the checkpoint file to be updated 
if it's changed in the main database. When the file is loaded the points are 
looked up in the current database to see if there's any updates needed. To 
implement your solution we'd lose this ability as well as other information 
about the point. It would also mean another format change for absolutely no 
good reason.
