As Shawn wrote, the maximum number of satellites can bee 12. The additional
channels of a receiver are used to receive some of these 12 with week
signals twice or even more. Think of these 20 channels as 20 individual
receivers. The unit can use more than one of its channels to receive a
satellite. In other words a certain satellite is received with several
receivers simultaneously. This increases the sensitivity of the unit. Due to
the nature of digital signals and the phase modulation scheme of the gps
system this works in dead. If a data bit cannot be detected by one receiver
there is a certain chance that it will be detected by the second channel. By
the way, the holux m1000 - a very new unit - uses 32 channels. I got mine
yesterday. And it is more sensitive than a typical SiRf3 Unit.
