Hello Michael,
yes, you can simply backup your database files in your database folder onto 
your PC's harddrive, a memory card or what ever. You do not need to export 
them.

By the way: I agree with you concerning the response time of the database. I 
made some tests with a db including 300 and another with 20000 points. I 
couldn't notice an increased response time. Maybe the db engine will respond 
slower with a million points ;-).
